Hi Suzanne,

You're not alone; there are still a lot of OpenVMS systems out there using Oracle. We're running 7.3 on our machines here, and are going to be experimenting with 8.0 in a few weeks, just as soon as I get get some more disk space! I've got budget for a GS60 (8200) for next year. We're going to do Oracle VLM on it.

We're pretty confident with Oracle's plans for OpenVMS. We've had a lot of discussions with both Compaq and Oracle regarding their future. Compaq is moving OpenVMS towards the mainframe model - big and stable. I tend to view predictions of VMS's demise the same as the extinction of the mainframe - it ain't going to happen anytime soon. In the past, Oracle releases for OpenVMS tend to lag the UNIX ones by about nine months. We like to wait for all the bugs to be found on the UNIX platforms before doing the VMS upgrade anyway.

As for SIGs, you should check out the DECUS Information Management SIG. The mailing list is INFO-MGMT-SIG_at_DECUS.Org.

We've got a bunch of consultants doing DBA work here, but they're mostly one- or two-person shops.

Chris
