There are freely available programs like "idled" that might help you out. Our company found a problem with these approaches, since they use the Unix definition of "idle time", which is based on keyboard activity. So we wrote (and sell) something called LOGMON. This software monitors the cpu usage for each user and their child processes. That way we won't log off a user running a cpu bound process with no keyboard activity.

LOGMON lets you vary the inactivity time by user, time of day, etc. You can control how users are logged off. For details, send a message to logmon_at_computron.com. Thanks!
