Data Warehouse Models

Are there mathematical puzzles, models etc that best fit the problem of optimizing performance on a data warehouse? Something topological or perhaps a model used elsewhere, such as in network design or even road traffic?

I'm looking for a sort of Martin Gardner type problem, like a good jigsaw puzzle but that relates to this field. I'm not a sysadmin but a designer/writer, working on a marketing problem, so if you respond, try not to get too technical- -I know about some of the more visual mathematical models like mandelbrot fractals and klein bottles, but just the 'look and feel' of these things. Thanks for any help or pointers.
