We have found the sybase DBD stable for our uses. The version numbering does appear excessively pessimistic.

Sybase on linux. Currently on CD three of Redhat 5.2 official

Around $50, or free if you download it (33MB + 9MB doc). The Sybase on Linux license is remarkably liberal.
