Christophe, I think your right.

I reclaimed all the unused space in all the tables and indexes in the system table space, then resize the datafile, no good. I even truncated all the empty tables in the large segment of the system data file, then resized, still no good. Recreate is next.

As a warning to all (mostly us somewhat lazier types), it's very easy to create large extents by using the OEM tools, better to use command line and think about what you're doing.
