If a disaster should occur and your machine blows up, you will only be able to restore to the last archive log you backed up to tape, (provided you keep you tapes away from the computer that just blew up) not necessarily up to the minute.

I wouldn't send them directly to tape, this could slow down (or potentially lock up) the system. Archive them to disk and then backup the completed archive logs. Delete them? I would keep enough logs on disk (provided you have the disk space) to restore from your last cold backup. This will make restoral faster if your logs are already online (i.e. you dont have to restore them from tape.) Also, it will give you a second means of restoring: Imagine its friday and you have to restore, the full cold backup restores fine, then the tape holding the 1st archive log fails--- guess what, the remaining "daily archive" tapes are useless....)
Not sure what version of Oracle you are using, but Oracle8 now can backup only DATA, whereas previous version backed up the entire tablespace whether it contained data or not. Oracle8 also allows you to do true incremental backups.
In this case you could do a full on Sunday, and an incremental each night that contains ALL of the data added/changed since the last full backup. A Saturday restore might allow you to apply the full, then friday night's incremental then a couple of archive logs. This should be a much faster restore than restoring a weeks worth of archive logs (which can be very time-consuming.)
