help with table utilization

We have an application receiving call and several tables are open and

closed in turns.      One main table like APPL is open almost through to
the end of call for the applicant information entry.         We have found

that APPL holding the system while more concurrent users use this table.

Can anyone tell us any good way to make the process faster, in turn of Oracle application design, such as updating at night to get more resource for more concurrent users receiving the call?

Any thoughts are appreciated.
