Maybe I was bit sarcastic but there are simply too many variables to make a judgement call as to what a "typical hardware platform" should be for -any- database.

In addition there's a lot of business factors to consider too. What existing hardware is being used? What maintenance and support contracts are in place? What skills does inhouse IT (or IS) have to support the platform and operating system? What are the budget constraints? What is the expected growth of the system going to be? Cost justification. Do you write your hardware off over 3 or 5 year periods? Etc. Etc.

So yes, I get a bit sarcastic when the "what hardware platform we should use" come up. I have very very seldom seen a system fail because of the underlaying hardware. Hardware is usually easy to fix and upgrade. But I have seen many systems fail because of screw ups by management and project managers making the wrong technical decisions ito development times, development tools, getting involved with technical issues they know nothing about....

I remember running my fist "database". A 4MB dBASE 3+ database on a 20MB 8086 Novell file server.... :-)
