remote connection with SQL*Plus

Perhap I'm overlooking something in the docs but I don't can't seem to find the incantation I'm looking for. Full Oracle 8.0.5 install on one machine and the client library and SQL*Plus on another (both Solaris). On the server, I can connect to the database with SQL*Plus but on the other machine, the connection attempt just hangs. When the SQL*Plus process fires up prompting for a username, I thought the syntax was "user_at_host" and it'd connect to whatever database ORACLE_SID is set to but that doesn't seem to do it. I fired up the listener with lsnrctl as the oracle user on the server... what's missing here?
TIA --
