Yes, the typing changes were minor -- but the concept of turning on archivelogmode and starting the archive process is a huge change.

I think you can try to start the database manually via svrmgr and doing an open nomount and issuing two commands:

  1. alter database noarchivelog
  2. alter database open resetlogs
