end of file on communication channel (HELP PLEASE !!)

Hi

Probably a very straightforward and daft query

I've just come back after the weekend and found that I am unable to access the schema manager / sql etc. Tried a complete shutdown and restart but keep getting same error.
Although everything seems to be running fine when do a 'DBSTART' at the end of the instance I get the following error :-

ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

When I try to logon to the SQL worksheet manager I get the ORA-01034 ORACLE NOT AVAILABLE. This is only a test DB so the problem is not particularly urgent however any and all help is greatly appreciated.
