This approach is outlined in more detail in an Oracle White Paper - I got it off OCIS, but I guess the awful MetaLink will have it somewhere.

I did it for real a couple of years ago, and be warned it is a non trivial task if you are only able to restore part of your backup onto your recovery machine.
