I don't know Nowell but I show how can do it on UNIX

first change ORACLE_SID from OS !!

ORACLE_SID=new_instance #This is very important !!!!!! EXPORT ORACLE_SID
After (if you always create confignew_instance.ora, initmy_instance.ora and ...) go to server manager (on UNIX svrmgrl) and from it

connect internal
(svrmgrl return that connect to an idle instance) startup

thats all!!
I hope that is similar on Novell and I help you
