Database in EXCLUSIVE mode - cannot mount

Help!!



I cna start my Instance in NOMOUNT mode but I cannot get to MOUNT mode
as I receive a message 'Cannot open database in EXCLUSIVE mode' I
thought this was the default mode of the database which meant only one
instance can be used for it. Does this mean I need to make it PARALELL
mode? Can anyone clarify this for me?
