Why the newly added logfile member is always invalid?

Using Personal Orackle 8.0.3

Startup database with mount only.
Add logfile member to the existing group.

Check the v$logfile.
The status of the newly added logfile member is always marked as INVALID no matter whether the group is active or not.

I have to use
alter system clear unarchieved logfile group # to make it valid before use it. But I know it will bring trouble for recovery later.

Is there anything wrong I did or is there any better solution?
