For a fully working agent, you should see two processes running.
- Check the services.ora file in the $OH/network/agnet directory.
Should contain all you databases and listeners running on the UNIX
box.
- Check your oratab file, and make sure no garbage is still in there.
The agent doesn't like dummy information in that file.
- Check for a file called nmiconf.log, which contains the discovery
errors.

You can do basic manipulations with the console without the agent. This is what you are doing right here. If you want the jobs and events used from the console, you'll need an agent on the UNIX box. For SYSDBA logins, specify this is in the File/Preferences menu in the console.
