We developed SneakPeek postings as a result of many Usenet users' desire
for a summarizing tool that would help them skim through the most active
threads. Thus, SneakPeek postings are intended to help users with limited
time keep abreast of group discussions, stay in touch with more groups,
and check out new groups quickly.
Usenet is an environment where every voice should count equally. However,
while some users have found SneakPeek postings useful, others have tried
to shout it down, potentially resulting in the tyranny of a vocal few.
Therefore, we encourage all to post their constructive opinions so that we
may democratically decide if there is room for SneakPeek postings in Usenet.

SUBJECT: Bitmap Indexes
- Roman Gelfand:
Platform - windows nt 4.0
Oracle - 7.3.4.0.0
I had created a bitmap index on a field which has a very low cardinality. I
enabled all initialization parameters affected by the bitmap index. When I
do a select which searches bitmap indexed column, the explain shows me that
a full table scan was done.
...
- Kevin P. Fleming:
Have you done an ANALYZE TABLE COMPUTE STATISTICS on the table after
creating the bitmap index? If not, the cost-based optimizer won't know it
exists, and will never choose it.
- Dariusz Trocha:
I'm afraid, optimizer won't take a bitmap index plan unless:
- it can use two or more bitmap indexes simultaneously or
- you put a hint forcing him to do this
SUBJECT: Re: Sybase vs Oracle: Temp Tables
Maybe I have been brainwashed by Oracle, but I don't see the need for a
temporary table. Other than not having to explicitly create and drop a
table what does it buy me to have temporary tables?
- Paul Moore:
...
The basic problems I have found are
- create table is DDL and so imposes an implicit commit
- you need to use DBMS_SQL to issue a create table in PL/SQL
- you need the explicit drop - in SQL Server (where I have seen
temporary tables previously) the temporary table is automatically

- Ng K C Paul:
Will this feature available in the coming announced oracle 8.1?

SUBJECT: Are you Connect Internal Compliant?
- nasof:
I often see posts about the Oracle "Internal" user and I just thought I'd make
everyone aware (that doesn't know already) that it will become unsupported
soon. I know alot of DBAs have CONNECT INTERNAL hardcoded into scripts...
...
- jhy:
So what are we supposed to use?
...
- Robin Bishop:
I think you're meant to assign SYSOPER or SYSDBA privilege to a 'normal'
user account and then use the syntax 'connect user/pwd_at_host AS SYSDBA (or
SYSOPER)'. So says the Server Manager Users Guide.
SUBJECT: Grabbing SQL statements from memory
- Nexus Product Centre:
Hi guys and gals,
Can anyone help me with the following problem??
I have an Oracle 7.3.2.x database and need to track some SQL statements
that are causing a problem.
...
- Jeroen van Sluisdam:
You should query v$sqlarea or v$sql_text
...
- nasof:
Try modifying the SQL below to suit your needs:
select sql_text from v$sqltext_with_newlines
where address in (
select sql_address
SUBJECT: Oracle 7 and 8 on a machine
- Eckart Schultz:
Is it possible to install / run Oracle Server 7 and 8 on one machine
together?
- jhy:
It worked fine on NT. The only thing I found odd was that when it
installed Oracle 8 it created a second listener and left it in manual
start up mode. The installation said to manually modify the
LISTENER.ORA file to resolve conflicts between the two listeners, e.g.
- Ronald:
I did not try to run 2 listeners on NT but it should not be a problem. Just
give them a uniq name and port to listen to. This is how it works on normal
computers.
