Ora v7.1 to v7.3 speed problems (VMS)

Hi all,

We're planning to upgrade our VMS v6.1/Ora v7.1 systems to VMS v7.1/Ora v7.3. We've set up a test platform with the target versions, but have discovered that it appears to run very slow compared to an identical machine running the older versions. I've heard rumors that Ora v7.3 does indeed run slower on VMS than Ora v7.1 - has anyone had experience with this upgrade that they'd like to share?

As an example, starting sqlplus and logging into our database ($ora_sqlplus:sqlplus usernam/passwd @) takes just 6 seconds on our current versions, but about 40 seconds on the test machine.

I should note that all of this is happening on a pair of MicroVAX 3900's, each with 64MB of memory. I admit that they are old and slow, but why such a big difference between Oracle versions??

I'm not a DBA by any stretch of the imagination - just the VMS system manager who's trying to establish whether he's stuffed up the config, or really is going to have to fork out for new hardware...

Thanks,

Dean Batten.
