As a first workaround, using the above mentioned EPC_DISABLE is all you have to do. Shutdown of instances and deleting these files is not required.

If you want to get some disk space back you probably want to delete the *.dat files, or at least bring them to their default size.

Only for this you have to shutdown your Oracle instance.

By the way, these *.dat files are not instance-wide, but product-wide files.

Assume you have installed a couple of Oracle 7.3.3 Instances and a couple of Oracle 7.3.4 instances on the same server.

All instances of the same version uses the *.dat files on Oracle-product directory. So, if you want to delete them, you have to shutdown all Oracle instances of the same Oracle version.
