We run F50's and S70's without problems. They use the same Oracle installation CD.

We also run SP2's at our two sister sites, and yes, there do seem to be far more problems installing/configuring/patching the SP release. In some cases this is due to people exploiting more complex Oracle configurations on the SP2's MPP architecture with Oracle Parallel Server - which requires 'raw' disks for *everything*, BTW. We've also seem our sister sites run into problems on the SP2 even in simple configurations. Still, we use Oracle on the SP2 and it's stable once you get it all set-up right. Just be prepared for some hassle at the start, and get yourself well trained in the SP2 architecture/admin side of things.

I run an S70 with around 1/2 TB of disks dedicated to Oracle. I installed AIX 4.3.1 last week. This also had a bit of a buggy reputation in it's 4.3.0 release. I've only noticed one small problem with AIX 4.3.1 (in the 'sort' command on large files), but IBM had a patch for it. Apart from that the S70 has been a great Oracle server. Very fast, too - don't be misled by the slow clock-speed of the R64 processors (125MHx), they run CPU intensive programs 2.5 times faster than our 332MHz processors in the F50.

One thing to note is that you'll really need to know AIX, LVM and Oracle *very* well to get the most out of an S70 or an SP2. A simple translation of db's and apps will probably be a bad idea.
