Locating Oracle Versions

Hi All,

I need to figure out the exact version of the Oracle Server prior to establishing a connection.

A quick look shows $ORACLE_HOME/orainst/RELVER seems to have what I want, at least on Solaris w/ 7.3.2 and 8.0.4.

Will this work in most cases ?

Is there a smarter more reliable way to do this ?

Things like
SELECT * FROM product_component_version; are no use as I want the info prior to connection.

Many thanks in advance
