Shutdown taking days

I've got a 5 Gb test database on an NT server running ver 8. For the last several weeks, when shutting down the system, I've done a shutdown immediate. Last night I did shutdown normal. It's been sitting there for 16 hours so far and I don't know if it's hung or if it's processing.

I do know, I think, that my rollback segments were full as I got an error message that one of them has hit it's max extents. Does this have anything to do with it?

Should I do shutdown normal on a regular basis?
