I found that large, multi-table ( 8+ ) joins can sometimes take enormous amount of time in parse phase. This was true only after an import, which ESTIMATES statistics, and before a full COMPUTE statistics on V7333/AIX. Most of the parse time, though, was spent waiting on Library Cache enqueue.
