Oracle 8, Oracle Name Server, and Global Database Links

I've just noticed that Oracle 8 when used in conjunction with Oracle Name Server, provides 'Global Database Links':

SQL*Plus: Release 8.0.3.0.0 - Production on Tue Jul 7 18:16:24 1998

(c) Copyright 1997 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.

Connected to:
Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release 8.0.4.0.0 - Production With the Partitioning, Objects and Parallel Server options PL/SQL Release 8.0.4.0.0 - Production

SQL> select * from all_db_links;
[there are no db links that this account can see]
no rows selected

SQL> desc some_table_at_gpd_tst
ERROR:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied ORA-02063: preceding line from GPD_TST
[gpd_tst being another database id on a totally seperate server]

Anyway, this is all well and good, but is there some way of qualifying the user that the remote database should be connected to?
