Object Type - ORA-00904

I am walking thru chapter 4 in "Oracle 8 The Complete Reference". I created an ADDRESS_TY object and a PERSON_TY object then a CUSTOMER table as shown. I inserted a record using the appropriate constructor methods. When I perform a DESCRIBE CUSTOMER I get ... PERSON PERSON_TY instead of NAMED TYPE as shown in the book. I perform SELECT CUSTOMER_ID,PERSON.NAME FROM CUSTOMER and receive the 904 error, invalid column name.

Has anyone else run into this? What am I doing wrong or missing? --
