First, the comparison isn't really right. The AS/400 is a machine (presumably running - is it - OS/400 or something and ? synon ? ) - I did do some AS/400 but it was a long time ago. So this leads to one reason (the main reason?) for using Oracle: (relative) platform independence. Also, breadth of user base.

I think some of the options offered by Oracle might be difficult to find on AS/400 databases. Not knowing current technology, I couldn't say but: parallel query; multi-threading; distributed database; web-server capability. Also, there may be machine specific limitations - I know when I used synon on AS/400 it was quite an impressive application generator but hardly an intuitive GUI.

However, it may also be that multi-platform is no great benefit to you and the database you use on AS/400 provides you all you need - in which case, no benefit in moving.
