WAS 3.0.1, Java cartridge and sessions

We are experiencing a problem whereby running a Java applet with a static counter variable seems to be incremented across sessions i.e. Even though 'client sessions' is enabled in the Java cartridge configuration screen, a static variable in a Java applet which keeps count of the number of times the applet is executed seems to be incremetable by different users i.e. user ONE increments it to 2 and user TWO increements it to 3 etc..

Each user do does not seem to have their own session count i.e. user ONE executes and gets 1 and user TWO executes and gets 1 etc etc.

Has anyone got Java sessions to work without writing a new Cartridge?

NOTE: These sessions as understand it allow the developers to get around having to setup cookies etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.
