There are various combinations of v7 and v8 client and server connections. They are detailed in the "Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Getting Started page 7-5" manual.

For example:

Oracle7 client needs to connect to local Oracle8 database -

Must have SQL*Net v2 , Net8 Client, Net8 Server in Oracle7 client Oracle home.
