I believe Thomas Kyte ( who works for Oracle ), replied to a similar query several weeks ago, to the effect that the book is wrong. This paragraph should refer to SHUTDOWN ABORT only, not SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE.

My apologies to Thomas if I've misquoted him.
