I like a separate unix username for each SID, with it's home directory set to that instances $ORACLE_HOME, and the .profile to set the $ORACLE_SID correctly (and other such things).
I also like to keep the unix uid the same for all these usernames, so they each have the same file permissions, each have the same OPS$ORACLE login, each can connect internal.
/etc/passwd:(Comments removed to keep line length down)
101:101:Oracle:x::/var/opt/oracle:/usr/bin/bash 101:101:Ora716:x::/app/home/oracle/product/7.1.6:/usr/bin/bash 101:101:appdba:x::/app/home/oracle/admin/APP:/usr/bin/bash 101:101:mimsdba:x::/app/home/oracle/admin/MIMS:/usr/bin/bash 101:101:paydba:x::/app/home/oracle/admin/PAY:/usr/bin/bash
Each of these accounts is *LK* locked in /etc/shadow so you can only su to them
from root. This would not normally be the case where you split unix admin and
dba.
