I had the same problem on Solaris, but it turned out to be just a parameter being set too large in the init<SID>.ora initialisation file. The ones to check are db_block_buffers and shared_pool_size. We had DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS set at something like 20,000 which multiplied by the block size of 8192 hogged approx 163MB of memory!!!
