Log writer hammering disk io + report.txt

Hi, I suspect this question doesn't have a simple answer but here goes ...

Although I realise that the redo logs and the log writer are prime resource bottlenecks. I am experiencing very high IO rates during key batch processes, and have narrow the culprits down to the above. What would be the effect of increasing the log buffer parameter.

Also does anybody know where I can get more explanitory info on report.txt as I am struggling to derive any useful info from it.
