Rule #1 - Do not use the default configuration.

Rule #2 - See Rule #1.

Rule #3 - See Rule #1.

All kidding aside, the Oracle default configuration is not intended for production use. If you go into the parameter file you will see that the small configuration is selected whereever there is a choice.

Get yourself a good book on Oracle 8 Tuning, revise your parameters in accordance with the advice in the book, run ANALYZE on your tables, and then rerun your
tests. I suspect that after you do you will find out why Oracle outsells SQL*Server on the NT.
