If you forget the internal password you can recreate the password file using the orapwd utility. According to Oracle manuals, internal is just an alias for sys (but when you change the sys password, the internal password does not change! talk about inconsistency). Oracle manuals also suggest that the sys password be changed/synced with the internal password whenever orapwd is used to change the internal password.

The syntax is something like
orapwd password=secret file=<full path to password file> Note: the old password file ha to be removed first
