Oracle write timeouts

For various reasons, I would like to be able to write lock the filesystems containing an Oracle database (for a few seconds). Unfortunately, Oracle does not appreciate this and LGWR dies with the following messages:

error 221 detected in background process OPIRIP: Uncaught error 447. Error stack:

ORA-00447: fatal error in background process
ORA-00221: error on write to control file
ORA-00206: error in writing control file '/opt/oracle/v716/dbs/c_001_omc.dbf' (block 33, # blocks 1)
ORA-07376: sfwfb: write error, unable to write database block.
SVR4 Error: 62: Timer expired
Additional information: -1
Additional information: 1
ORA-00345: redo log write error block 3449 count 1
ORA-00312: online log 5 thread 1: '/opt/oracle/v716/dbs/l_005_omc.dbf'
ORA-07376: sfwfb: write error, unable to write database block.
SVR4 Error: 62: Timer expired
Additional information: -1
Additional information: 1

Can anyone suggest a way to either
1) extend the timeout associated with whatever timer is expiring in the

   above.
2) freeze Oracle for a few seconds without disrupting the applications

logged into Oracle (the delay is unimportant to them).

I'm using Oracle 7.1.6 (but may be moving to 7.3.2) on Solaris 2.5.1
