Billy gave you a very good reply. I would like to add that you can compare performance and scaleability by taking a look at the published benchmarks for various platforms. This info is published by the Transaction Processing Performance Council, and can be downloaded from their web site at www.tpc.org. Take the benchmarks with a grain of salt, though. Just because Sun managed to get 51,000 transactions per minute with a Sun box running Oracle doesn't necessarily mean that you can to (although you shouldn't be too far off!). Just remember that the numbers aren't necessarily "absolute", but they are very, very good for comparisons.
