Turn Off Redo Logs?

Is there a way to turn off the redo logs? The nightly backup of the database here is good enough incase of failure. Would turning off the redo logs increase the effeciency of updates and inserts? Now the database doesn't do that many inserts or updates, so the redo logs don't get hit very often, so turning them off might not add that much more speed so it might be worth keeping them around.

Also, what is the rule of thumb for size and number of redo logs?
