value?

I quess it is AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII. At least the charset portion is US7ASCII by default.

There is no NLS_LANG in database. You specify the characterset of the database when creating it (use 8-bit charset). You can set other NLS-parameters in init.ora. See the values with the following command in svrmgrl:

        SVRMGR> show parameters NLS

Again, no NLS_LANG parameter in database. When you create a new database set the CHARACTERSET to some 8-bit charset (WE8DEC for instance). Set the NLS_LANG environment variable correctly on every client, at least the charset portion. This depends on the client, for instance on VT220 terminal it may be WE8DEC, on HP-terminal WE8HP and on Win95/WinNT WE8ISO8859P1 The incorrect setting causes troubles to handle multinational characters, like Ä,Ö,Å (scandinavian chars).
