in case you're interested, and i realize that this isn't *precisely* what was originally asked about, but the Enterprise Java Beans specification does lay out the preparations for "entity" beans in EJB <= 1.0

currently, WebLogic corp (http://www.weblogic.com) does have a server, Tengah, that implements 0.8 of the spec and does (via container-managed method) manage the persistence of objects to relational databases without self-written persistence.

it is worth a try... compare this to Persistence's products, etc..
