Oracle wants you to mirror for best performance although I get good performance on by Clariions with RAID 5 and having the write cache enabled on the RAID controller. The tuning books have several "mock" configs for best performance but you REALLY need to know which tablespaces get nailed the most, how much sorting goes on and what the index activity is like. The "general" rule is to keep busy tablespaces AWAY from each other spindles. This becomes harder and harder to do with virtual disks with pieces all over creation.
