Problem setting up ARCHIVELOG

I tried to set up ARCHIVELOG on my unix server (sparc20).

So I did

log_archive_dest         = /u209/oraPROD/arch
log_archive_format      = redo_%S.arc

in init.ora and startet the db up.

But I got

SQLDBA> Connected.
SQLDBA> ORA-00256: error occurred in translating archive text string '/u209/oraPROD/arch'
ORA-07287: soagdi: unsupported device for log archiving. QLDBA> SQL*DBA complete.

I did not a mistake in spelling the directory or anything other !

I'm frustrated AND IT'S round midnight .....

So, if anybody can help I would by thankfull
