It is a misfeature on Oracle's part. Which hardware and versions you have
determine whether it is something you can ignore (so everybody take note,
when you ask these problems, state your environment). Look at the root.sh,
you may see that it is just testing whether you are running the root.sh
remotely, and if you're not, gives the message. Yes, that is really stupid.
In some versions (on hp-ux at least), if blows up if you don't have a numeric
ulimit, which is also really stupid. It shows a lack, on Oracle's part, of
even trying to run the installation on major ports before shipping.
It should be in your IUG, but I think they took it out when they fixed
some even worse doc errors.
