It's nice to have that luxury of being able to down your Oracle database and take a cold backup Fang. But if you can't, then that backup strategy is not only useless but dangerous.

As Steve Phelan and S. Chavali have already stated, Backup methodology is dependant on the particular situation of each database. There is NO best method that works in every instance. (No pun intended)
