Newbie Question - Repository

I am relatively new to Oracle and D2K products. I have moved from Access databases.

Both Enterprise Manager and Designer 2000 talk about the repository.

Where does the repository fit in to the database? What would the equivalent be in Access (if this is possible)?

I have created and used DBs without any regard to doing anything to the repository, and things seem to be working OK.
