The question is how long do you keep your backups ? If you keep your backups only one week and start then to overwrite the old backups, there's
no reason to keep the arch-files longer, cause they can only be used together with
an offline(or online)-backup. So if you have 3 generations of backup you should have the
arch-files with the same age (either on disc or on tape).
