February's Tip of the Month

Sizing database blocks

Oracle always reads in 64k chunks. It is best to size your database blocks and multi-block read count such that their product is 64k. Optimal results for full table scans have been reported with a 4k block size and a 16k multi_block_read_count equivilent setting.

Join the DBA Pipeline. It is completeley free, with no restricted areas. If you are (or plan to be) an Oracle DBA, this is a great place to keep your finger on the pulse of Oracle technology.

Best wishes,
