I have a similar sized database on a sparc with RAID 0+1. Compressing through pipes to another machines RAID-5 disk, complete exp takes about 11 hours. YMMV.
You might check if your volume manager can do a filesystem mirror for you. Veritas on a Sun can do a snapshot filesystem in seconds. Whether you want to do this depends on the purpose of your snapshot.
