Multi-line text item

I have a multi-line text item in a form. I have enlarged the item to look like a box in order to display all lines. Is there a way to leave this item without having to use the mouse? For instance, if the item contains "User needs training" but my item allows 2000 characters, I want to press "enter" to go to the next item or whatever keystroke that will allow me to leave the item. When I press enter or tab, it just puts blank spaces or lines in the field and keeps going until it reaches it's maximum character size. Is this possible?
