There are other ways to get to Oracle from Excel avoiding the hassles of ODBC drivers all together. I made a free tool that uses OO4O which is mostly installed by default.
Have a look at http://members.aol.com/gjlinker/oraxcel
My tool Oraxcel consists of 1 file which you just can open (or drop upon) Excel. It will create a new menu item called Oracle in your Excel. Oraxcel lets you query Oracle and fetch the results directly into your spreadsheet. The full version also has a insert and update screen.
