I ran across that problem too, I think what you have to do (can't remember how I fixed the problem) is to set the PASSWORD variable in the init<sid>.ora file to EXTERNAL (or something like that). Then it should work fine.

PASSWORD = EXTERNAL
 Please forgive me, this happened too long agao for me to remember what the exact wording was. E-mail me if it didn't work out, and I'll give you the correct setting.
